Cultural Arts Background Information:
Chris Jordan is an artists and cultural activist. He uses his art to depict humanity's consumption and environmental downfalls. He has been know to use a variety of techniques from simple photographs to using pointillism through mediums other than paint (1). For example, his artwork entitled Cans Seurat depicts pointillism with the use of cans to create the individual dots. In his TedTalk, Chris Jordan explains his artwork, and the importance of depicting the unconscious things that we, as humans, do. He explains that as humans, we cannot visualize large numbers, so he uses his work to show these numbers and make an impact (2).
In the video from the Teaching Channel, it can be shown how important the use of visual art can be in the classroom. In the video, Mr. Durocher explains how he uses visual art to try to get students to understand the clues that artists provide, and the elements that are used by the artist (3). This information is helpful because when students can identify clues that the artist has provided, they can easily determine what the artist is trying to depict in their piece of work.
